Cretaceous Emery Sandstone Member of the Mancos Shale

The Emery Sandstone Member of the Mancos Shale is composed of upper Kmeu, and lower Kmel sandstone beds. There are 3 or 4 beds of sandstone concretions associated with the lower unit that contain fossils of the Clioscaphites vermiformis ammonite zone of middle Santonian age. Shown here is a bed of concretions about 50 meters below in the Blue Gate Shale Member of the Mancos Shale, Kmbg. The upper part of the Mancos Shale, Kmu, forms the slope below the Mesa Verde Group, Kmv, on the east side of the Wasatch Plateau. This photo was taken just west of the town of Clawson in Emery County.
